Dr Roopendra Banerji is a Specialist Obstetrician & Gynaecologist who moved to Shepparton in 2025 with his family and commenced his role as Clinical Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Goulburn Valley Health.
He has established his private practice at Shepparton Women’s Health Centre providing specialist gynaecological care for women across the Goulburn Valley region. He is operating at Shepparton Private Hospital for privately insured patients and undertaking operative procedures for uninsured patients at Goulburn Valley Health.
He brings over 30 years of experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology across Australia and India. He completed his medical training at the Armed Forces Medical College, University of Pune, India, obtaining MBBS and MD (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), and later achieved Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) in 2017.
His Australian experience includes senior specialist roles at Townsville Hospital, Griffith Base Hospital, and Canberra Hospital where he worked as a Senior Staff Specialist from 2020 to 2025 and was appointed Clinical Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 2023.
Areas of clinical interest include:
• General and acute gynaecology for Uterine, Ovarian & Cervical diseases.
• Uro-gynaecology and pelvic floor disorders (including Prolapse recurrence and Urinary Incontinence)
• Advanced Laparoscopy for complicated Hysterectomy and Endometriosis.
• Operative Hysteroscopy
• Evaluation of Pelvic mesh and Anal sphincteric injuries.
• Colposcopy and LLETZ procedures
Throughout Roopendra’s career, he has valued collaborative relationships with General Practitioners and believes that clear communication and shared decision-making are essential to providing the best outcomes for women. He welcomes referrals for gynaecological assessment, second opinions, surgical management, and ongoing specialist care.
Prior to his medical career in Australia, Roopendra served as a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist with the Indian Army Medical Corps, an experience that developed strong skills in leadership, teamwork, resilience, and providing care in diverse clinical environments. He also served with the United Nations Mission in Congo DRC in 2008-9.
Outside of medicine, Roopendra enjoys maintaining an active lifestyle through swimming, squash, cycling, and other sporting activities.
