Gynaecologist – Special Interest Urogynaecology

Dr Debjyoti (Deb) Karmakar is a Gynaecologist with a special interest in Urogynaecology,  whose commitment to women’s health spans over 24 years across India, the UK, and Australia.

His career focuses on Advanced Urogynaecology and Minimally Invasive Gynaecology. Deb graduated with Honours in MBBS in India from the University of Calcutta, India. He then completed his MD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. After working as a specialist in India in one of the biggest minimally invasive gynaecology units, he moved to the UK in 2013 for subspecialty training in urogynaecology and minimally invasive gynaecology. In 2016, he migrated to Australia and continued his subspecialty training at Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne, Australia, and has been a recognized specialist since 2018.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists UK (FRCOG), a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG), and an Associate Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (AFRACMA). Additionally, he holds a Master of Exercise Science (MExSc).

Deb emphasizes holistic, individualized care with a focus on quality of life and health span. He collaborates with allied health and medical specialists to provide comprehensive care and values shared decision-making with his patients.

In his public roles Deb currently serves at two of the busiest tertiary hospitals of Melbourne – Mercy Hospital for Women and Joan Kirner Hospital, and in the latter he leads the Urogynaecology Service and is the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research Lead. He holds the unique distinction of being credentialed for both advanced urogynaecology and advanced laparoscopy at tertiary units in metropolitan Melbourne. His contributions have been recognized with the RANZCOG – AOFOG Young Gynaecologist Award in 2022.

Areas of Special Interest and Expertise:

·            Pelvic organ prolapse, including recurrent and complicated cases
·            Urinary incontinence, including recurrent and complicated cases, with mesh-free surgery options
·            Other lower urinary tract symptoms in women including bladder pain.
·            Mode of birth discussions considering pelvic floor/perineal trauma
·            Bowel dysfunction and incontinence postpartum
·            Pelvic pain management
·            Pelvic floor dysfunction in high-impact athletes
·            Minimally invasive hysterectomies, even for complex cases
·            One-stop diagnostic services, including outpatient cystoscopy, bladder Botox, urodynamics, and anorectal studies

As a clinician-researcher, Deb has authored over 60 peer reviewed journal papers aimed at improving surgical outcomes in gynaecology. His PhD research, funded by the NHMRC, focuses on integrating Artificial Intelligence into clinical practice at the University of Melbourne for personalized medicine.
